Dental Fillings

If teeth are not properly cared for, they begin to decay and lose their function. As these caries progress, the teeth may become unusable and may even need to be extracted. Dental fillings are a treatment used to prevent tooth loss. Teeth that have started to decay or are broken due to external effects can regain their function through dental fillings. So, what is a dental filling, and how is it done? Continue reading to learn more about this process. If you think you need a dental filling, you can always visit our clinic.

What is a Dental Filling?

Teeth may need filling treatments for various reasons. A dental filling restores deformed teeth to health. This treatment is not one-size-fits-all; different materials and methods are used, providing various options for tooth fillings. The appropriate treatment method for the patient is decided in consultation with the dentist, considering the patient’s budget.

Tooth Filling Treatment Methods

There are four commonly used methods for dental fillings: amalgam, glass ionomer, composite, and porcelain.

Amalgam Dental Filling: This is the most widely used and least costly method. Amalgam is composed of elements such as mercury, copper, silver, and zinc. Amalgam fillings last an average of five years before needing renewal. Their color is much darker than natural tooth color, which can be a concern for aesthetics. Therefore, they are typically used on upper and posterior teeth where visibility is less of an issue. If you are allergic to mercury, inform your dentist to explore alternative filling methods.

Glass Ionomer Tooth Filling: This type of filling is safe for pregnant women and children and does not contain harmful substances. Glass ionomer fillings release fluoride, which helps strengthen the teeth.

Composite Tooth Filling: Preferred for its durability and color matching with natural teeth, composite fillings are ideal for front teeth. Composite resin materials are mixed and poured into the tooth cavity, taking its shape. These fillings are cured using LED lights and are often used in dental aesthetics and smile design treatments.

Porcelain Dental Filling: Porcelain fillings are more durable and aesthetically pleasing, harmonizing well with natural teeth. They are more costly than other types and may need to be completely refilled if broken. Since porcelain fillings are custom-made in a laboratory, the treatment involves multiple sessions, requiring more visits to the dental clinic.
