Periodontal Diseases
Periodontology is a branch of science that deals with diseases affecting the gums. When teeth are not cleaned properly, food residues accumulate on and between them, producing bacteria. These deposits, known as bacterial plaque, are the primary cause of dental caries and gingivitis. Over time, they form tartar as a result of saliva precipitation.
The first sign of gingivitis is bleeding in the gums. This condition becomes more noticeable with changes in gum color, deformities, and bad breath. Tooth loss caused by gingivitis is much more common than tooth loss caused by caries. It should be noted that healthy gums are light pink, firmly adhered to the tooth and bone, and have a shiny, rough appearance similar to an orange peel. Healthy gums do not bleed.
